Cutting fluids are basically defined as the liquid which is used in the metal cutting process. The functions of the liquid which most operators understand is to remove heat, lubricate, flush away the chips and debris, and offer some corrosion protection for the parts and machine's surfaces.
Another function which is not that obvious is that cutting fluids coat the part's surfaces for anti-weld protection. The phenomenon of a freshly cut surface which is so clean and still hot, will allow a newly cut chip to weld to the surface. This directly affects the quality of the part as well as tool life. The anti-weld function occurs when the cutting fluid coats the surface with a thin film as it cools the part, so welding cannot take place.
The staff at Harrigan Solutions understands the functions and needs of cutting fluids so they can help with the selection of the proper cutting fluid and explain the needs for maintaining the life of the fluid.
