Advantages, Disadvantages And Applications Of Decanter Centrifuge

Introduction to the working principle of horizontal screw centrifuge

Horizontal screw centrifuge is a device that uses the centrifugal force generated by high-speed rotation to achieve solid-liquid separation. Its main structure consists of a drum, a screw propeller, a differential, a motor drive system, a feeding device, a slag discharge device and a frame.

The material is continuously fed into the high-speed rotating drum from the feed port. The drum and the screw rotate at a certain differential speed at the same time. The drum generates a strong centrifugal force field, which causes the solid particles in the material to quickly settle to the inner wall of the drum and be pushed to the slag discharge port by the screw for discharge, while the clarified liquid is discharged from the overflow port at the other end, realizing a continuous, automatic and efficient solid-liquid separation process.

This structure and working mode enable the horizontal screw centrifuge to adapt to a variety of materials with different concentrations and particle sizes, especially suitable for processing suspensions with high solid content, high viscosity and difficult sedimentation.

Main advantages of horizontal screw centrifuge

1. High degree of automation, continuous and stable operation

Horizontal screw centrifuge realizes automatic control of the whole process of feeding, separation and slag discharge, can operate continuously for a long time, greatly reduces manual operation, saves labor costs and improves production efficiency.

2. Wide range of applications

It can be widely used in industrial wastewater, domestic sewage, sludge treatment, juice extraction, starch separation, oil separation, protein recovery, lees dehydration and other industries, with strong applicability.

3. High separation efficiency

Since the centrifugal force is much greater than the gravity (up to several thousand times), even fine particles (a few microns) can be quickly separated, achieving low solid moisture content and high clear liquid clarity.

4. Low energy consumption, energy saving and environmental protection

Compared with traditional filtration or sedimentation equipment, although the horizontal screw centrifuge needs motor drive during operation, the overall energy consumption is relatively low, especially suitable for handling high-load continuous working conditions.

5. Small footprint and compact structure

Horizontal screw centrifuges are usually designed as integral structures, with small footprint, which is convenient for equipment layout and system integration.

6. Easy maintenance, strong and durable structure

The drum and spiral are made of high-quality stainless steel or alloy materials, which can withstand high wear and high corrosion environments. The equipment is stable and reliable, with low failure rate and low maintenance cost.

Disadvantages and limitations of decanter centrifuges

Although decanter centrifuges perform well in many aspects, there are also some limitations that need to be noted:

1. The initial investment cost is relatively high

Compared with traditional equipment such as sedimentation tanks and belt filter presses, the one-time purchase cost of decanter centrifuges is relatively high, especially for large-capacity and high-configuration models.

2. There are certain requirements for feed stability

If the feed fluctuates too much, such as drastic changes in concentration or excessive impurity entrainment, it may affect the separation effect and even cause abnormal operation of the equipment.

3. The replacement cycle of some wearing parts is short

Parts such as spiral blades and drum liners wear faster under high load conditions and need regular inspection and replacement, which puts forward certain requirements for user maintenance and management.

4. Noise and vibration problems

The noise and vibration generated by high-speed rotation need to be controlled through reasonable structural design and installation foundation, which is not suitable for places with strict noise control.

5. Not suitable for processing ultra-low concentration materials

For materials with extremely low solid content (such as suspended solids concentration in sewage <0.5%), the separation efficiency will drop significantly and may need to be used in conjunction with other equipment.

Typical application areas of horizontal screw centrifuges

Horizontal screw centrifuges are involved in almost all industrial scenarios that require solid-liquid separation. The following is a classification description of their main application areas:

1. Environmental protection field

(1) Municipal sewage treatment

Used for sludge dewatering treatment in urban sewage treatment plants. After treatment, the sludge moisture content can be reduced to about 70%, which is convenient for transportation and subsequent treatment.

(2) Industrial wastewater treatment

Suitable for wastewater pretreatment and terminal dehydration in electroplating, papermaking, printing and dyeing, chemical and other enterprises to reduce the burden of emission pollution.

(3) River silt cleaning

It can be used for mud and water separation after salvage and dredging to achieve resource recovery and environmental protection purposes.

Chemical and pharmaceutical industries

(1) Separation of fine chemical products

Including solid-liquid separation of resins, coatings, calcium carbonate, zinc oxide, catalysts and other products.

(2) Antibiotic and drug production

Applied to bacterial separation and protein extraction in fermentation broth to improve production capacity and product purity.

Food and beverage industry

(1) Fruit and vegetable juice extraction

Can be used to separate juice from pulp of fruits and vegetables such as grapes, apples, carrots, and pineapples.

(2) Starch and protein extraction

Separation and processing of corn, potato, and wheat starch and their by-products (such as protein).

(3) Brewing industry

Used for recovery of lees and yeast and purification of clear liquid in the production of beer, liquor, and wine.

As a mature and efficient solid-liquid separation equipment, the decanter centrifuge has become the core equipment in the production lines of many industries.
