Application And Advantages Of Decanter Centrifuge In Municipal Wastewater Treatment

  • by

The Basic Principle of a Decanter Centrifuge

A decanter centrifuge utilizes the powerful centrifugal force generated by the high-speed rotation of the drum to rapidly settle and discharge solid particles in a suspension, achieving solid-liquid separation. Its main components include:

Drum: Cylindrical-conical in shape, it is the core component generating centrifugal force;

Scroll: Rotates at a slightly lower speed than the drum, conveying the settled solids to the discharge port;

Differential Gear: Controls the speed difference between the scroll and the drum, thereby controlling the solids’ residence time and moisture content;

Feeding and Discharge Systems: Enable continuous feeding and liquid discharge.

When sludge containing suspended solids enters the centrifuge, the liquid rapidly stratifies under the strong centrifugal field:

Solid particles are thrown to the outer wall, forming a cake;

The clarified liquid flows towards the center and is discharged;

The scroll continuously pushes the solids towards the discharge port, achieving continuous dewatering.

This separation method is fast, efficient, and highly automated, making it ideal for municipal wastewater treatment scenarios with high continuity requirements and large processing volumes.

Main Applications

1. Primary Sludge Dewatering

Primary sludge produced during the initial sedimentation stage of wastewater treatment has high water content and low solids content. Direct transportation or incineration would be costly. A horizontal screw centrifuge can reduce the water content from approximately 98% to below 80%, significantly reducing the burden on subsequent treatment processes.

2. Concentration of Excess Activated Sludge

Large amounts of excess activated sludge produced during biological treatment have high viscosity and fine particles. A horizontal screw centrifuge can concentrate the sludge to a solids content of 5%-8%, facilitating subsequent dewatering or drying.

3. Dewatering of Mixed Sludge

Many wastewater treatment plants mix primary and excess sludge for further treatment. A horizontal screw centrifuge can achieve efficient separation and optimal sludge cake dryness by adjusting differential speed, flocculant dosage, and rotation speed.

4. Integrated Sludge Conditioning and Dewatering

Combined with a chemical dosing system, a horizontal screw centrifuge can simultaneously complete flocculation and mechanical dewatering, achieving automated integrated operation and reducing labor and energy costs.

Advantages of Horizontal Screw Centrifuges

Continuous Operation & Automatic Control

Horizontal screw centrifuges can operate continuously for 24 hours a day, equipped with automatic dosing and automatic sludge removal systems, achieving unattended operation.

High Processing Capacity

A single unit can process tens of cubic meters of sludge per hour, suitable for large-scale municipal projects.

Excellent Separation Effect .Utilizing an optimized drum cone angle and spiral structure, it achieves high solids capture rate and low effluent turbidity.

Small Footprint

Compared to belt filter presses and thickeners, it occupies less space and offers flexible installation.

Superior Hygiene and Environmental Performance.Fully enclosed operation prevents odor leakage and secondary pollution; the dewatered sludge cake is easy to transport.

Simple Maintenance & Low Operating Costs
No filter cloth or filter plates are required, reducing consumables; low energy consumption and long maintenance cycles.

Key Parameters of Horizontal Decanter Centrifuges

When selecting a horizontal decanter centrifuge, the following technical factors should be considered comprehensively:

Throughput: Matching the sludge production volume to avoid overloading or idleness;

Drum diameter and length-to-diameter ratio (L/D): Affecting separation accuracy and solids retention time;

Differential speed range: Determining the solids discharge rate and dryness;

Drum material and corrosion resistance: 2205 or 316L stainless steel is recommended to adapt to sludge pH levels;

Automatic control system: Including PLC, HMI display, and remote monitoring functions;

Energy consumption and noise level: High-efficiency motors and low-vibration structures contribute to energy saving and environmental protection.

Horizontal screw centrifuges, with their high-efficiency dewatering performance, reliable operating structure, and intelligent control capabilities, have become indispensable key equipment in municipal wastewater treatment. From primary sludge to activated sludge thickening, they not only improve treatment efficiency but also contribute to environmental protection, emission reduction, and resource recycling.

In the construction of future green cities, horizontal screw centrifuges will continue to play a crucial role, helping wastewater treatment plants achieve a new model of modern sludge treatment characterized by low energy consumption, high efficiency, and intelligence.
