Application Of Disc Centrifuges In Plant Extraction

Separation Challenges in Plant Extraction Processes

Plant extraction processes include crushing, solvent extraction, filtration, separation, concentration, and drying.

Centrifugation is a core step used to:

Separate solid residues from the extract;

Extract pure essential oils from the mixture;

Remove waxes, impurities, and moisture to improve essential oil quality.

Traditional filtration and sedimentation methods have significant shortcomings:

Slow sedimentation rate and low efficiency;

Prone to clogging and frequent cleaning;

Inability to achieve high-purity oil-water separation;

Unsuitable for continuous large-scale production.

In contrast, disc centrifuges, with their centrifugal forces of up to 6000–9000g and continuous operation capabilities,

can achieve precise separation of complex materials within seconds.

Structure and Principle of Disc Centrifuges

A disc centrifuge consists of a rotating drum, discs, a feeding system, a liquid discharge device, and an automatic slag removal system.

Its working principle is based on the powerful centrifugal force generated by high-speed rotation:

Feeding Stage: Material enters the drum through the feed pipe;

Separation Stage: The centrifugal force generated by high-speed rotation causes components of different densities to form layers between the discs:

Higher specific gravity (such as solid impurities or aqueous phase) settles to the outer layer;

Lower specific gravity (such as oil phase) accumulates in the inner layer;

Discharge Stage: Continuous liquid discharge is achieved through different outlets or liquid seal devices; Solid impurities can be automatically discharged or slag can be discharged intermittently.

This design allows disc centrifuges to achieve high-purity separation in a very short time,

while ensuring a closed, clean, and safe system.

Technical Features and Advantages of Disc Centrifuges

1. High-Speed, High-Precision Separation

Optimized disc design achieves a separation factor of up to 10,000g, capable of handling fine particles smaller than 0.5μm.

2. Fully Enclosed Operation

Utilizing a mechanical seal and nitrogen protection system, it prevents aroma volatilization and oxidation reactions, meeting food and pharmaceutical grade production requirements.

3. Automatic Slag Removal System

Automatic intermittent slag removal reduces manual cleaning; uninterrupted separation process, suitable for continuous production lines.

4. Hygienic Design for Material Contact Parts

All parts in contact with materials are made of 316L stainless steel or 2205 duplex steel, polished to Ra≤0.4μm to prevent residue and bacterial growth.

Disc centrifuges are becoming key equipment in the natural extraction industry chain. With their high efficiency, precision, cleanliness, and safety, they ensure that every drop of plant essence is perfectly preserved.

In today’s world, where “green manufacturing” and “sustainable development” are global trends, disc centrifuges are not merely separation equipment, but a bridge connecting nature and industry.
