Spiral Decanter Centrifuge, Sludge Centrifuge for Industrial Separation

The LW Sedimentation Centrifuge is a horizontal, spiral-discharging centrifuge that operates continuously. It is commonly used in various industries to separate solid-liquid suspensions, clarify liquid phases with different grain sizes, and dewater sludge. The decanter centrifuges effectively remove solid particles as small as 10 µm without the need for flocculants. In the event that flocculants are used, these machines can also separate even smaller particles from the liquid (water). This allows for the recovery of clean process water, which can then be reintroduced into the industrial process. Consequently, mining operations can greatly reduce their need for fresh water.

Modern dewatering solutions can effectively treat mining residues and recover valuable process water bound by tailings. This reduces the environmental burden of storing tailings in large settling basins or sludge ponds and offers cost-effective and eco-friendly benefits.

Tailings, in mining, are fine-grained residues in the form of sludges that are created during the processing of ores and minerals. These residues, which are partly contaminated with chemicals, are often stored in sludge ponds and pose a significant risk to the environment. Any breaks in the dam can result in a major impact on both humans and the environment.

Tailings storage methods are evolving, with dewatered tailings becoming more common in place of sludge pond storage. Many mining companies now opt to store dewatered sludge on the ground in accordance with legal guidelines. Dewatering the tailings is especially beneficial in areas that are difficult to access or prone to earthquakes, as it reduces environmental hazards and saves space. In addition, recycling the processed water can lead to significant cost savings in mine operations.

As the mixed liquid enters the high-speed turning drum, the solid-phase particles are subjected to the greatest centrifugal force, causing them to run and settle on the drum wall. Meanwhile, the lighter liquid settles at the innermost part of the drum under the minimum centrifugal force. Simultaneously, a screw feeder rotates at a high speed in the same direction as the drum, creating a constant speed difference through the differential mechanism. This allows the liquid to be discharged through the liquid outlet.

Decanter Centrifuge Application:

Decanter centrifuge is commonly utilized in various industries such as municipal and industrial waste water treatment, food processing, pharmaceuticals and chemicals, among others.

Types Of Decanters

There are multiple decanter centrifuges used in the industry, including vertical, horizontal, and conveyor types. The technology works by separating substances through gravity, such as in the case of a mud and water mixture where the heavier mud will settle at the bottom allowing for a clear separation between the two substances.

Decanter Principles

In the decanter centrifuge, gravitational force is utilized in a similar manner to that of the glass mixture. However, continuous rotation speeds up the process significantly, providing up to 4000 times the normal gravitational force and reducing the separation time from hours to seconds.

Rotational Separation

The process of rotational separation is comparable to what can be experienced on amusement park rides and at county fairgrounds. By positioning oneself at an angle, it becomes possible to counteract the gravitational forces caused by rotation. In a similar fashion, a decanter centrifuge is composed of a rotating bowl tube that operates at an exceptionally high rate of speed. The bowl tube is outfitted with an internal conveyor that moves in the same direction at a varying velocity.
